We were pleasantly surprised not only by the advanced features and even more amazing technologies, but also by the new, thinner ring shape and cool design. Having received a gadget that you can actually easily wear on your finger, it became interesting to try it on yourself...
Let's see together whether smart rings can supplant bracelets and watches in the wearable electronics market?
Oura Ring: design and size
Since the user is expected to wear the device on their finger 24 hours a day, comfort, weight and shape are critically important for a smart ring. And the company pays great attention to ensuring that the user can choose the right size. The company is ready to send anyone a special kit to determine the correct size. Oura recommends trying out several sizes first and then using the selected size for a day. This format will allow you to understand whether the selected size really fits. Also, convenience is also important because most of the functionality is dedicated to sleep tracking. Accordingly, it is assumed that the ring will be put on the finger not only during the day, but also at night.

It should be noted that from the moment of their appearance, it was the design of smart rings that was their Achilles heel. The form factor itself seems very successful to us. It may even be more promising than wrist gadgets. But... It's all about design.

The weight of the gadget ranges from 4 to 6 grams depending on the size, which is slightly lighter than even traditional rings. Oura Ring 2 is only 7.9mm wide and 2.55mm thick. Thus, the device looks more like a regular wedding ring. When the ring is on your finger, it not only looks thin, but most importantly, it feels thin! So you can wear it all day, all night, without taking it off in the pool or while training in the gym.
In order to please a larger number of potential buyers, Oura designers went further and offer two modifications of the ring - Balance and Heritage. Balance is a ring with a sleek, classic shape, with a small ridge at the top (left in the photo below), which can even be framed with small diamonds (center in the photo below). The model is available in black, silver and rose gold.

However, not only the form has changed. In the second generation of the device, the company also changed the material from which the smart ring is made. The sensors are located on the inside of the ring. There is an infrared optical pulse sensor, a 3D accelerometer, a gyroscope and a body temperature sensor. Those areas that come into contact with the skin of the finger are coated with a special hypoallergenic non-metallic alloy, so the skin will not experience irritation. This, by the way, is extremely important for a device that is supposed to be used without interruption 24 hours a day for a long time.
Oura Ring: application and features
We wouldn't go so far as to say that smart rings are going to disrupt the smartwatch market. However, for fitness trackers, the threat is very real. And also for Fitbit. After all, a significant part of the company’s sales is not the popular Versa sports watch, but activity and sleep trackers.
Given that the Oura smart ring does not have a screen, user interaction is only through a smartphone app. And it is very important that the application is very good and has a user-friendly interface.
To begin with, let's say that the application is compatible with smartphones on both IOS and ANDROID.
The logic of the developers when creating the second generation of the ring is such that each sensor built into the ring complements each other’s data and participates in many algorithms. General conclusions are based on generalized data about the user’s body temperature, measurement of his heart rate, heart rate variability, etc.
When starting the application from the top, the user is offered an interesting metric called the “readiness indicator”, followed by blocks of information about sleep and activity. If you scroll to the right, you can see information for previous days and other periods. The user has access to more detailed information on each of the blocks; they just need to open the one they need.
At first, the application seems overly simple. However, after some time, the understanding comes that the logic laid down by the developer is very simple and correct - to provide basic information quickly, without overloading with details. Gradually, by opening various categories, more and more detailed information on each block becomes available to the user. Overall, an excellent and well-thought-out application. Oura Ring: User Readiness Level
We have never encountered this metric in the market before. Looks like this is something new. On the one hand, this is cool, on the other, it is initially alarming. As far as we have been able to figure out, this is an arbitrary metric, a kind of visual motivation that encourages the user to increase their activity level.

And the developer pays great attention to this metric. As a reminder, the readiness score is the first thing a user sees when opening an app. The metric is available in a range from 0 to 100. It takes into account how well the user slept the night before, how quality of sleep he or she had over the past couple of weeks, and how effectively the user managed to combine periods of activity and rest the day before. Additionally, data on body temperature, heart rate, and heart rate during sleep are taken into account. Perhaps this is the most voluminous indicator on the market. This makes some sense if the user really wants to understand how the listed indicators change over time.

In addition to data, the application provides advice to the user. For example, the application can ask the user how he feels if, in the opinion of the application, something is wrong. In theory, this should force the user to listen to his feelings and try to determine whether everything is in order.
Our opinion is that with this certainly very interesting indicator, Oura is trying to motivate the user not just to increase physical activity, as the vast majority of gadgets on the market do, but to develop that ideal balance between activity and periods of recovery for the body, so that the body really feels good. Sometimes it's better to skip a workout and recover so as not to overdo it, right?
And it seemed to us that there was something in this. And it really works. Even using the example of the author of the review, who has a long-standing knee injury, which makes itself felt if you overexert yourself with training. So, such an algorithm allows you to more correctly and smoothly distribute the load throughout the day without overloading the body. This is also true for mental activity.
A simple example: one day, waking up as usual and getting ready to go to the gym, the application reported that I slept worse than usual, and it was better to devote this day to restoring the body. Indeed, only a few hours later the author began to feel the effects of poor sleep. If training were added to this, it would be much harder for the body. Of course, such recommendations are very subjective and should not be blindly trusted. However, this once again forces you to listen to your body and understand what is happening to it. But the final decision, of course, is up to the user.
Temperature monitoring from Oura. The fact is that the smart ring monitors changes in body temperature and can promptly detect early signs of an impending illness. Girls can use it to detect small temperature fluctuations during their menstrual cycle. Oura Ring: sleep monitoring
Thanks to its array of built-in sensors, Oura Ring 2 is an excellent sleep tracker. Like the “readiness level” section, the sleep monitoring section provides a comprehensive rating based on the analysis of several parameters. Among the parameters monitored are total sleep time and sleep efficiency (how much the body recovered during sleep), anxiety level (how many times the user woke up during sleep), and REM and deep sleep stages. Each of these areas is given a separate score. If the overall sleep score is low, then you can figure out in detail what exactly caused this.
The user can see graphs dedicated to different phases of sleep and determine whether the user woke up, which stage of sleep he was in at different periods of time, how much the body recovered, and so on.

The next interesting point is dynamic activity goals. In short, the goal for the next period is formed taking into account how active the user was in the previous period, how well he slept and how much his body managed to recover from previous activity. As with the User Readiness Score metric, the focus is on restoring the body and ensuring adequate sleep and rest.
Thus, the goal of each next day will change. And this is another advantage of the smart ring, compared to fitness trackers that provide static goals. At the same time, the ring understands that the user may have had too much at a party the night before, and will not be able to be active the next day.
