A little about Chris Hemsworth
In 2014, Chris moved to Australia again, although he continues to act in Hollywood films
Chris was born in one of the Melbourne maternity hospitals in the summer of 1983. The future actor’s mother was an English teacher, and his father was a social worker. The boy had two brothers - the elder Luke and the younger Liam, who eventually also decided to try their hand at cinema.
It was the older brother who set an example for Chris and convinced him at the age of 18 to take part in the casting for the first time, and at 19 to agree to the first role. Hemsworth was invited to play King Arthur in the serial film for children “Gwen Jones”, after which he received offers from series directors. Perhaps the most successful for the aspiring star was the soap opera Home and Away, in which Chris was involved in 170 episodes at once.
Chris was born on Thursday, and the English name for this day of the week comes from the Old Norse "Thor's day"
At the age of 26, Hemsworth set out to conquer American Hollywood and almost immediately became involved in several significant projects, including the films “Star Trek”, “A Perfect Escape” and “Big Money”.
The film Thor brought Chris to the category of superstars. In it, a native of the Australian capital played the main character - a young thunder god exiled to earth. The idol did an excellent job with the task assigned to him by the director: he convincingly got used to the image of the character in the Marvel universe and gained about 10 kg of muscle mass for this role.
Hemsworth auditioned for the role of Thor twice. The first time he was rejected, and he decided to abandon this idea, but then he changed his mind and came to the casting again.
Before filming begins...
Before filming Thor, Chris Hemsworth had a beautiful, toned body. Since childhood, the guy has been interested in boxing, playing rugby with friends, and surfing. He didn’t try to pump up a bunch of muscles; his body already looked great on camera, and his fans were delighted. But when it came to casting for the role of Thor in the film “Thor,” the actor realized that he absolutely did not have enough muscle mass. The Thunder God's costume was too loose, which did not allow Chris to look like a real thunder god.
Many suitable actors auditioned for the role of Thor, but Chris turned out to be worthy. The only condition was to gain some muscle mass. But who knew that a guy with a height of 190 cm would be able to gain more than 10 kg of pure muscle, because already in the frame he weighed about 100 kg.
“When I looked at the image of Thor in the comics, he looked like... Eh, Schwarzenegger is resting. But I set myself the goal of getting as close to the image as possible and, of course, becoming bigger. I trained a lot and ate a lot. I was constantly haunted by the thought of how to gain even more mass. Shortly before filming began, we had to test in front of the camera. I put on the Thor costume and soon felt that my hands began to go numb. I realized that I had gone a little overboard with the bulking as I was getting bigger than I thought I would be.”
The directors' opinion: “Chris took a responsible approach to the task assigned to him for the role of Thor. He became the same as we saw the God of Thunder in the frame. He had incredible strength and fury, like Hercules.”
Even with the release of the first trailers for the film, the audience was in absentia attracted to Chris Hemsworth in the role of the God of Thunder. And after the premiere, the actor woke up as a star. Men tried to find out the secrets of his weight gain, and women only dreamed about him.

Training for the movie "Thor"
For his role in the first part of Thor, the actor gained about 10 kg of muscle mass
Chris Hemsworth could boast of being in good physical shape even before working on the film. The actor is a longtime supporter of a healthy lifestyle, a lover of boxing and surfing. At the time of the start of preparation for the filming of the fantastic action film, Hemsworth’s height was 190 cm and his weight was 90 kg.
In order to bring the image of Thor to life on screen, such indicators were not enough. The actor needed a special training and nutrition program, which allowed him to build muscle in a short time.
For the filming of Thor, the actor gained even more mass than necessary - the costume of the god of thunder turned out to be too narrow
Chris Hemsfort's mentor was Duffy Gaver, a famous trainer whose services have been used by many Hollywood stars, including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolly and Adam Sandler.
The master offered Hemsworth a training program that involved four days of grueling training in the gym, followed by one day of rest. At the same time, the break could be unplanned if the actor felt tired. In addition, Chris had to sleep well - at least 8-10 hours.
Hemsworth prepared for the role for six months
In the gym, the idol was required to constantly change the load and speed of exercises in order to prevent the body from getting used to the exercises. “When training begins to seem easy, it no longer gives the necessary impact,” the actor’s mentor repeatedly repeated.
The complex included basic exercises with which you can build muscle mass in a short time. In addition, the trainer included cardio, yoga, boxing, surfing and Muay Thai, because in the frame Hemsworth had to swing a heavy hammer and participate in fight scenes.
The actor loves surfing and wants to introduce his children to this sport someday.
On the first day, classes began early in the morning. The actor strengthened his chest and shoulders: he lifted dumbbells from a lying position and performed a bench press with a medium grip. This was followed by a seated dumbbell press, and the morning part of the program was completed with dumbbell lateral raises and the Arnold Press exercise, aimed at strengthening the deltoid muscles. Each exercise included 3 sets of 8, 10 and 12 repetitions.
Then Chris took a break from classes and returned to the gym in the evening. The program for the second half of the day included boxing training: first on the bag, then on the paws. Next, Hemsworth moved on to exercises with a jump rope. The actor performed 5 sets, each of which lasted exactly 3 minutes. Then the performer of the role of Thor took on his abs: for a minute he performed an elbow stand, then a minute side. This was followed by 20 leg raises in a Roman chair, as well as the same number of crunches on blocks and lying side crunches.
Before each take, the actor did several sets of exercises to look perfect on camera.
The second day of training contained exercises for the back and arms. It started with pull-ups and deadlifts. Each of the three sets included 15, 12 and 10 repetitions of each exercise. This was followed by barbell curls and French biceps presses. They also had to be performed in 3 sets of 10, 8 and 6 repetitions each.
Next, there was a break in physical activity. Hemsworth returned to classes in the evening. At this time, he again performed boxing training and abdominal exercises according to the first day program already given above.
The program of the third day of classes included the actor’s favorite surfing. If desired, Chris sometimes replaced it with half an hour of interval cardio (running or punching bag lasting up to 60 minutes). Although more often the Australian still preferred activities at sea.
In the evening, the idol performed 3 sets of 10, 8 and 6 exercises, first for leg extension and then for leg bending while sitting. The workout was completed with deep squats with a barbell, which the actor also performed in 3 sets containing 10, 8 and 6 repetitions.
Chris Hemsworth devoted the fourth day of training to abdominal exercises. He performed them according to a program that was similar to that already worked out on the first day of classes.
Chris Hemsworth combined strength training and high-intensity interval training
Today anyone can try the complex that the actor used before filming the role of Thor. The idol launched a special fitness application with which you can repeat his training course. At the same time, the actor reminds that beginners need to train very carefully.
In his youth, Chris was involved not only in surfing, but also in football. The future actor even dreamed of joining the national team, but due to a shoulder injury he had to leave the team.
Day 1 (upper workout): arms, chest, abs
On the first of the weekly training days, the actor performed exercises to work the upper body, namely the arms, pectoral muscles and abdominal muscles.
In the first half of the day, as part of the impact on the shoulders and chest, the training involved the following exercises:
- Reduction of dumbbells in a lying position.
- Barbell chest press from a lying position.
- Bent-over dumbbell flyes from a sitting position.
- Standing dumbbell flyes.
- Arnold press.
During the day there was a break, and in the evening there were classes in the boxing gym. The actor boxed with a punching bag, practiced punches with a trainer on his paws, and also practiced jumping rope.
Next came a set of abdominal exercises. Circuit training worked the target muscles perfectly. Hemsworth performed overhead crunches, side crunches, forearm planks, and hanging leg raises on the bar.
Nutrition program
At first, the actor’s daily calorie intake was 6,000
A balanced diet helped the actor build muscle mass. In the plate of the idol of millions, proteins and complex carbohydrates predominated, while fats and sugars were kept to a minimum. The daily calorie intake was 3690.
During the day, Hemsworth had six meals. Chris later joked that “all he had to do before filming a science-fiction film was to eat constantly.” True, the diet was very monotonous: it included fish, chicken, rice, broccoli and spinach.
The actor drank 4–5 liters of water a day
For breakfast, the idol ate 4 eggs, a bowl of porridge with water and a couple of some fruits that provided the body with fiber.
For second breakfast, Chris allowed himself 1 or 2 more fruits, as well as a handful of nuts.
Thor's lunch consisted of a pair of chicken breasts with a side dish of brown rice or potatoes, and a vegetable salad.
This was followed by an afternoon snack, for which the actor had tuna, a couple of fruits and a handful of nuts.
For dinner, Hemsworth ate steak or fish with vegetables on top.
The last meal for the actor was the second dinner - the actor drank a protein shake.
Sometimes Chris even had to wake up in the middle of the night to drink a protein shake.
Of course, Hemsworth carefully controlled calories and food quality. Chris preferred healthier and more natural options, for example, using quinoa as a substitute for rice.
