The right questions for a trainer from a beginner or how to choose a pro fitness trainer

How to lose weight quickly?

If you hurry, you will make people laugh. This folk wisdom will come in very handy if you decide to get rid of excess weight and improve your figure. Trying to do it quickly, you can not only lose weight, but also lose your health. And if you gain back the lost kilograms very quickly, then no one will return your health.

Just as you can't build a spaceship in a day, you can't build the body of your dreams quickly. Be patient, set realistic goals and deadlines for achieving them, reconsider your lifestyle in favor of health and beauty. Do fitness, eat right, lead an active lifestyle, enjoy every day and success on the way to your ideal!

What workouts are the most effective?

Believe it or not, there are no ineffective workouts. Each person is individual, and each activity has its own specifics. That is why now there are a huge number of different training programs, and each of us can choose what suits him according to his level of physical fitness, age, gender, mental characteristics and worldview.

In addition, the effectiveness of classes depends on the trainer: on how much he loves his profession, on his charisma, skill and education.

How does body tonic differ from other workouts?

I can’t explain to you how body tonic differs from other workouts, but I can tell you what body tonic means to me.

The most amazing thing in life is discovering the capabilities of your body. The human body is designed to move, and move actively, which is why we have more than 500 muscles, and they are so complex and interesting. Bodytonic allows me to better understand and feel my body, its features and capabilities. I notice my weaknesses and try to overcome them - for example, by fighting for balance in training. I endure muscle pain when holding poses, I overcome fatigue and laziness, completing exercises to the end.

Bodytonic is more than just fitness. This is part of my life and perception of the world, which I convey through exercises, communicating with you from computer or TV screens. Bodytonic is a natural workout: exercises are performed without special equipment using your own body weight or with objects that surround you in everyday life. This helps you better feel and understand your body and its interaction with the world.

Qualification of gym trainers

Expert: Sergey Shvets

The qualifications of fitness trainers, especially gym trainers, is perhaps one of the most challenging and frequently cited issues in the fitness industry. This topic is often discussed at conventions, discussed in round tables and from time to time comes up, with quite heated comments, on social networks.

There are four main issues that are most frequently discussed during discussions. How many and what categories does the fitness market need? What comes first in a trainer’s qualifications: education or the number of clients training with him? Who should determine and control the level of knowledge, skills and professional skills of a gym trainer? Is there any point in having a structured qualification system?

QUALITY VS QUANTITY

The reason for the existence of the problem is primarily that the actively growing fitness industry in Russia has not yet developed and implemented uniform qualification standards. There is no tool that could and should be a necessary resource for all interested participants in the fitness industry - employers, training centers and, in fact, the specialists themselves. It would seem that you can go in two simple ways, and the most accessible ones.

First: apply the content of the qualification unified tariff scale that exists for public sector workers.

Second: use foreign experience, borrowing American or European categories of personal trainers. Only the first is unacceptable due to the significant difference between the goals and objectives facing physical education and sports workers (especially sports trainers) and fitness center specialists. The second method, from our point of view, cannot be directly copied - adaptation and meaningful, well-developed creation of criteria for coaching categories are necessary. Adaptation is the third, more difficult way, but it will create the most effective tool in the industry, taking into account the needs of all its participants. It would be wrong to say that in our country there are no qualified fitness trainers and no experience in training them. On the contrary, we have powerful state secondary and higher schools for training specialists in physical culture and sports. Every year, the country's physical education universities graduate more than 3,000 young specialists. Unfortunately, it was not possible to find statistical data indicating the number of those who decided to realize themselves in the fitness industry. But university graduates are the clubs’ main resource. It is worth noting that in the public sector of physical education and sports, about 15% of workers do not have special education. This is typical, unfortunately, for the fitness industry. The advantage is that industry participants understand the need to train specialists and have themselves begun to train personnel in accordance with market requirements. Almost all network companies have training centers in their structure that train new employees and improve the skills of existing employees. Including employees of other fitness clubs and companies. If we adopt foreign experience and compare it with what exists on the Russian market, then I would highlight four categories:

1st category: an employee must know and understand how a person works, what processes occur in his body under the influence of physical activity, he must have information about the main types of training.

2nd category: knowledge of the 1st category plus a set of disciplines in the field of nutrition. Ability to create personal training, including for special groups of clients (with cardiovascular diseases, musculoskeletal diseases, pregnant women). Functional and rehabilitation training.

3rd category: knowledge of the 2nd category plus personal PR and sales of services, age-related pedagogy and psychology.

Category 4: sports training, preparing clients for competitions. A separate category, implying the presence of higher education in the sport. The specialist is obliged (must) to confirm his category annually or every two years.

EDUCATION OR MONEY? It is necessary to carry out certification once or twice a year, which companies do on their own. Certification is an event with mixed results, and most employers understand this. A dilemma often arises, since an employee can demonstrate mediocre knowledge of theoretical foundations and be a highly sought-after trainer among clients. Based on the results of certification, an employee can change his category, as a result of which the cost of his services may increase. Most often, the category is changed based only on financial results - the number of personal training sessions conducted by the employee, and the number of categories is assigned based on the marketing strategy of the fitness center (network of fitness centers). It can reach 7 (seven). The difference in most cases is purely monetary, not implying a certain amount of knowledge from the specialist. But the opinion I share with most experts is the opposite. First of all, the category of a coach should depend solely on his knowledge and ability to apply this knowledge in practice. For this purpose, there should be special training centers for fitness specialists. Unfortunately, physical education institutions of higher education have not yet developed the training of fitness trainers among their specializations. Independent training centers (TCs) are filling this gap.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!

In fact, OCs, with rare exceptions, are mainly engaged in training entry-level trainers with basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology. The remaining knowledge is offered in the form of additional training seminars. This approach, in my opinion, is dictated primarily by the fact that employers impose their own requirements on the level of knowledge and skills for a graduate who has received an OC certificate, and in the worst case, they do not make any requirements. What underlies these requirements – a clear, structured system or a subjective assessment of one “guru” – remains on the conscience of the employer. An area that OCs have not yet paid attention to is the training not of an employee for an employer, but of the comprehensive training of an independent specialist for the fitness market. A specialist who is able to develop his own potential, invest time and money in his professionalism. Do not expect that the employer should provide him with work in the form of clients, but be able to communicate with people, understand their needs, know and be able to build a training program in order to achieve goals together with the client. This is a more promising type of specialist, fundamentally different from the generally accepted one. Training centers lack dialogue among themselves to offer an educational product in accordance with the needs (qualification categories) of the market. After all, OCs do not recognize each other’s certificates, and the consumer (trainer) does not have the opportunity, having received a certificate from one OC, to apply for the next category in another OC. And if this exists, then the cases are rather isolated. There is no dialogue with employers regarding simplification of the employment process based on the final exam of the OC. In any case, a candidate for trainer undergoes testing by the employer, which takes time and entails additional costs for the budget.

MODEL

What would an ideal competency model look like? Training centers, networked industry leaders, and independent fitness centers work together to implement qualification requirements, create professional categories and agree on the frequency of their confirmation. Fitness centers customize their price lists according to accepted categories, pricing them based on market demand in their region. All market participants, focusing on the quality of their product, send their coaching staff to undergo training and assign a category to the recommended educational centers. And, perhaps, the main thing: the employee (specialist) is responsible for compliance with the chosen category. The employer only has the function of monitoring the validity period of the qualification certificate. “Court” training centers of network companies could use the freed up time to organize seminars on advanced training. The system of qualification categories is beneficial to all its participants. TCs receive a regular flow of specialists, employers free up time and money, the end consumer is confident in the professionalism of the coaching staff, and the coach has job security and independence.

WHAT DO YOU NEED?

The role of the OC in this process is leading, since an association based on education can be built more easily. Experience shows that it is easier for fitness centers to interact with OCs than with each other. In order for the above model to work, five points must be completed:

1. The heads of the OC, based on operational experience, hold a joint meeting to determine the categories and the corresponding disciplines.

2. Make an offer to market participants to identify the optimal option.

3. Use the obtained result as the basis for changes. TCs are adjusting their educational programs, and fitness centers are adjusting their price lists.

4. Determine the timing and procedure for introducing new “rules of the game.”

5. Put the rules into action! I agree that on paper everything looks easy and simple, but in reality it may take more than one year. But what I am absolutely sure of is that it needs to be done. This is an important part of our industry, which will make our work a little easier. And the entire industry as a whole will receive a bonus in the form of loyalty from consumers.

I work out my abs, but my stomach doesn't go anywhere.

What to do?

Many people believe that if you train only your abdominal muscles, you can quickly lose weight around your waist and gain the coveted six-pack abs. Give up hope, everyone who trains like this! Of course, this is a myth: such training will not improve your shape. This issue requires an integrated approach, which includes the following components:

1. Proper nutrition. Without a balanced diet, no matter how hard you train, your progress will be zero.

2. A complete training program. A combination of cardio and strength training is required. Your task is to speed up metabolism, improve the condition of the muscular system and improve health.

3. Lifestyle. Bad habits, stress, lack of sleep - all these are obstacles on the way to your ideal figure.

Questions for a coach during an interview

The applicant must clearly answer the questions posed and try not to let any water in his words. The employer must understand that this is a specialist.

In the part of the interview where the employer asks you to tell “about yourself, your hobby,” you should not limit yourself to two words. You need to try to discover your approach to life through your hobbies.

  • Love to spend time outdoors and exercise often.
  • You adhere to a healthy lifestyle and do not have bad habits.

The employer must be sure that you will charge your clients with positive energy and a desire to return.

In addition to telling about yourself, you will have to answer a number of other questions. The employer can ask questions about the structure of the training, the characteristics of physiological processes in the human body.

The boss is interested in the professionalism of the specialist, so you should be prepared for questions about practice and theory. Practice your answers in advance:

  • Why did you decide to become a coach?
  • Are there certificates to confirm your level?
  • What group trainings have you led?
  • How do you distribute the workload between people of different skill levels?
  • What kind of education did you receive?
  • What experience do you have with clients? Have you dealt with difficult clients? Have you attracted clients to join the club?
  • How would you warm up before class?
  • How much attention do you pay to your diet?
  • How do you assess the client's physical condition?
  • How do you deal with a client who is dissatisfied with your work if the problem is his lack of motivation?
  • How do you keep clients who aren't putting in the effort motivated?
  • If a client has an injury, how do you change the training program? What will you do to prevent injury?
  • What are you doing to expand your clientele? How many clients do you plan to manage per month?
  • What do you think about vegetarianism? If you have a client whose eating habits are different. Can you develop a nutrition regimen individually?
  • Present a program to lose a lot of weight.
  • Often clients expect instant results. What do you tell them in this case?
  • Do you have your own sporting goals?
  • Tell us about three effective exercises that you would offer clients first. Why do you think they are the best?
